Amores Perros Review

Review: Amores Perros

Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu

Amores Perros has got to be my favorite movie to have come out of Mexico so far. It is 3 stories combined into one movie. Each one is a complicated and often depressing human drama in which dogs play a central role. The first one is about underground dog fights. There were some very intense scenes, dogs destroying each other, their limp corpses being pulled from the ring, blood being hosed off. They did a hell of job with the realism, I was almost (repeat almost) fooled this time. The main actor in this section, Gael García Bernal, seems to be finding his way into all the best spanish-speaking roles over the past 5 years. He's great in this movie, as well as the rest of the cast. Although the stories each have their own sections during the movie, they're weaved together by a series of events and are sometimes revisited. The little mysteries of how their connected unfold throughout the movie and adds another level of interest. For instance, a car crash during the first part sets the stage for the plot in the second, and is revisited again during the third.
