Director: Kinji Fukasaku
Imagine if you will a futurist society, where the kids have rebelled against school and are no longer willing to go and be taught. When the government steps in and forces the kids to go back to school, as a punishment one 9th grade class is chosen to go to a deserted island and...kill each other off. There is no escape. If you try and leave a necklace that is strapped to your neck will explode, leaving a bloody mess. 'Here ya go, kid. Here is a pack filled with some food and water, oh and a weapon.' But, the weapon could be a gun. Or a pair of binoculars. Or a pot lid. This movie, from one of the greatest Japanese horror/action directors is a far shine from anything this country has seen. Fukasaku, who recently passed away, was a close friend of Quentin Tarintino, who has adopted many of his styles in his movies (ie, Kill Bill, which actually was dedicated to Fukasaku in the Japanases version of the release). This movie, based on a series of Manga books, is probably the most fun you will ever have with a film.

The movie and the Manga books were actually based on a novel by Koushun Takami. Read my review on it here: Battle Royale review.
