GNAW -Food of the Gods part II Review

Review: GNAW -Food of the Gods part II

Director: Damian Lee

There are but few creature-feature films that I find appealing. Either they have to be exceptionally (un)creative and funny (I will NEVER forget the 'monstrous' sweet, funny bunnies from Night of the Lepus for as long as I live) or monumental (the original King Kong). Most monster movies suck only to a level of banality.... Gnaw is a notch under the common monster and thereby gains in charm, if not sympathy (you just have to be sorry for everyone involved making this horrendous piece of cliché-shit). This movie is sequel to a movie that was a mistake on it's own... (I have yet to see the full 1979 original)So what happens a decade later ?- Exactly, a sequel....... Brace yourself for the plot of this one. A doctor injects some growth-syndrom into a kid and he won't stop growing...tam-tam-taaaaaaam. You would thing you heard the 50-ft Woman stomping form the late 50's wouldn't you ? Mutant, gigant kids - it has allot of potential to make an interesting if not entertaining horror/cult movie, right ? Probably, but that's completely irrelevant here, no, the kid just keeps growing off-screen from time to time but the focus goes to...RATS. That's right, rats, big killer rats with rubbery tales that have evolved so far they have taken a disliking to cecronised swimming. Ha! I applaud these rats ! But surly they are the only things that they have a sense of taste in this whole movie! How do the rats get gigantic ? Well a kind doctor helps out the dumb-ass doctor who started giving the damn serum. However while trying to make an antidote (in a VERY laughable way, with super-cheesy 80's computer animations that make NO sense), the rats get hold of one of his mutant tomatoes and start growing.... I swear the amount of clichés mounts highly in this flick. Some 'story' twists really make you think that the scrip was written under influence of psychedelic means... One scene of instance involves a guy injecting the growth-serum before having sex...turning him into a giant fucking a midget.... Logic gets thoroughly defied throughout the entire movie. The cheesy, crappie FX also raise eyebrows more than once. The giga-rat attack at the end looks incredibly laughable. Bad models, some jumbo with the camera angles, some actual dolls... Sometimes almost convincing (if you really believe is gigantic killer rats that is) and here and dare some relatively nice ripped off faces. But my favorite piece of this movie has to be the 'love' between the good doctor and his good (white, all the bad ones are black) pet rat....How tragically that ends. Good trash laughs, that's all you can hope to get from this one.
