Gong Fu (Kung-Fu Hustle) Review

Review: Gong Fu (Kung-Fu Hustle)

Director: Stephen Chow

Let me start by saying that Stephen Chow is today's Jackie Chan; he does his own stunts (when it is physically possible), and is the comedic relief in all the films he is in (despite being able to kick your ass at the same time.) For those of you who saw his last American release (Shaolin Soccer) this movie is in the same vein as that film. It stars Chow as a wannabe kung-fu fighter who is trying to get into the most feared gang around: The Axe Gang. When the gang starts making trouble in Pig Sty Alley, a poor area the gangs usally ignore, Chow finds his way into the gang; He is ordered to release the greatest kung-fu master of them all from an assylum so that he will fight the people of Pig Sty Alley. Chow's inherent goodness keeps him from being able to attack the good guys of the film, and he instead trys attacking the master. When he gets his ass handed to him, it (somehow?) releases his Chi which he, in turn, uses to hand out his own ass kicking. The movie is a cross between Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Looney Tunes. It has plenty of action to keep even the most die-hard martial arts fan satisfied, and plenty of comedy for those people who can't stand the violence. All in all, a great flick. To be released in May in theatres, available now online as an import from China or England.
