Before the days of the Ultra Super Deluxe Widescreen Dolby Digital 5.1 DVD, a movie like I Spit on Your Grave wasn't so easy to come by. You probably wouldn't find it at your typical Blockbuster or Hollywood video. But if you looked hard enough you might find an old burned-out vhs on the bottom shelf of some random video store. It didn't matter that it was blurry, filled with static, and you could barely make out what they were saying. I Spit on Your Grave was a lucky find. Some say it's pure violent exploitation, others say it's art. These rape/revenge movies seem to teeter on that line between art & exploitation. Why just last year I recall an actress winning an academy award over a rape/revenge movie (see the Monster Review). But it's easier to label a movie like I Spit on Your Grave as a low budget exploitation due to it's one-dimensional characters, bad dialogue, and the fact that the actress is fully nude during half the movie. But then it also some very powerful and rememberable scenes, the one in the bathtub is definitely worth the cost of the movie. This isn't as disturbing as say Cannibal Holocaust, but more so than Deliverance. If you haven't seen it by now, pick up that ultra-dvd or go to the oldest and dirtiest video store in town – it'll still be on that bottom shelf.
