Night Of The Living Dead Review

Review: Night Of The Living Dead

Director: George A. Romero

Ok, there are only good things to be said about this masterpiece … George A. Romero pulled the, at the time, somewhat ridiculous zombie out of the shadow of the Vampire and the Werewolf and put it on a skull pedestal. Just for the record, if anyone will try to sell you the ‘new colour version’(read re-make) of Night of the Living Dead , please spit in their face! You can not beat the charm and abidance, nor the originality of the b&w version ! Actually the pictures I have seen of the colour version seem pretty stupid and insulting to the original… Night of the Living Dead was made with an extremely limited budget, compared to the sums movies demand now you can’t even call it a ‘budget’, you would have to call it a tip . Most of the zombies only got a t-shirt with ‘I was a zombie in Night of the Living Dead’ printed on it as their paycheque. The story is simple yet the dialogs are so realistic that you can’t help but get caught in the movie. The acting is wonderful and the labile woman who plays Barbara is simply psychotic and o-so-reflective. The theme here isn’t really the zombies but how people react to a panic situation.- How we differ and how morality , selfishness and instinct go into conflict with one another. -It’s a bit of a clash between psychological thriller and gore. Aside from that , the score is very heavy and gloomy. The Living Dead are slow, brutal but o-so nightmare bogeymen – the kind that you hit and hit but who falls on your lap to chew through your leg. Romero brings about a unique sense of panic and claustrophobia in this film. Even if you are not one to go for Zombie-flicks I highly recommend this to anyone ! The ending is simply shocking, and for it’s time it was completely unheard of. This is not ‘a zombie flick’ this is THE zombie flick !
