Director: Mel Gibson
I look at the Passion as a sadistic torture flick, like the Guinea Pig videos but with better effects and a theological story. It was extremely gruesome and that's what makes it so powerful. Same kind of power as something like the Isenhiem Altarpiece. 500 years ago Germans were making some of the most gruesome depictions of Christ ever made. This movie now tops it. I'm not at all religious, but I was raised protestant. I've never understood the "Jesus died for our sins" stuff. If God is all-powerful, then why would he make his own son be tortured to death in order to reverse His own punishments on humanity? That makes God out to be pretty sadistic and cruel don't you think? I look at it this way, God didn't create man in his image, man created God in man's image. We are violent creatures, therefor our god likes to kill us, flood us, and even let his own kid be tortured. Yes, we love violence in our entertainment AND our religion. Combine the two and you've got one of the highest grossing movies all time. Do you honestly think it would have been this successful had it been about Jesus's life rather than his death? Not a chance.
