Director: James Wan
I love horror movies. Any kind, for the most part. The thing that I loved about Saw was that it had so much potential in being a great Se7en style psychological thriller, with the gore and feel of a great, dirty, horror flick.
The thing that stopped this movie from being all it could be was the casting of Cary Elwes (who can definately hold his own in comedies, but couldn't pull this off if he were really in the perile shown in the film) and the screenwriter Leigh Whannell to play the main characters. Their combined (lack of) acting shoved this movie into the realm of shit, the only thing really keeping it alive being the great story.
If it were not for the incredible (yet predicatble) ending, this movie wouldn't have been worth the money paid to see it. Jacking up the gore factor could have helped a little, too. For an R-rated film about a devious killer/mastermind, there was little blood and gore throughout the film.

Totally agree. This could of been great, but plenty of unintentional comedic moments due to bad acting or dialogue sabotage the mood of this flick. So it goes back and forth between being really good and really bad - a combination I'm more used to seeing in a 70's & 80's italian horror.
