Don’t mess with me you dead bitch !
-Susan
Shatter Dead is basically trash with some short burst of fun. Shaky filming, a non-soundtrack and compressed sound make Shatter Dead look like a draft for a movie. But then again Shatter Dead is a no-budget independent film so what did you expect ?
The director obviously used "Day Of The Dead" as one of his main inspirations. However the thing is that, if you decide to make a zombie-flick, you had better have a good make-up artist or the whole thing ends up a one big embarrassment. The latter occurs various times in the movie, a good thing they mainly stuck to using ‘freshly deads’ whom aren’t suppose to look rotten yet. However Shatter Dead is not without any charm !
Welcome to the last days of the old generation cunt,
this is the beginning of redemption ! -Preacherrman
The plot sounds better than is look most of the time. – The angel of death, busty seraphim she is, somehow impregnates a mortal woman, which causes death to,…well die. So no one dies anymore and the dead come back to find their relatives. The whole world is in chaos and panic and some sick conspiracies begin to form. Susan, the titles heroine of the movie, tries to get back home to her boyfriend, Dan. However that’s easier said then done since there are gangs of kleptomaniac corpuses, fanatic religious zombies and infiltrating corpses around every corner. The violence and blood-porridge reaches it’s climax when religious fanatic zombies go about practising the will of god, and speed up the creation of a new love generation by killing the living.
Shatter Dead, a no-budget independent film.
As I mentioned before, most zombies look ridiculous (especially the green one whom gets pulped by the back of Susan’s gun) never the less there are some nice sequences such as a pistol blowjob, a pregnant woman getting shot in her belly with a shotgun (later the mother is drags out her unborn and undead infant from her splattered body to wash it), and a strange zombie-repair scene which is strangely reminiscent of Wizard of Oz’s Scarecrow! And for those whom enjoy a mixture of soft erotica and splat, the impregnation of the Angel of Death, a shower scene and a sex scene may serve as attractions. Not wanting to spoil it all I will also add that anyone who gets turned on by a gun will surly enjoy one special sex scene…
Shatter Dead has more flaws than most people will tolerate, but manages to inject a few spasms of intelligence into the Zombie sub-genre. For one thing, the undead aren’t the moaning brain-eaters you usually see crawling around your classic zombie film. There are also some actual pseudo-philosophical parts in the film which are mainly presented by Dan (played by Smalls Johnson, the only actor who comes close to acting in the whole film).
Another fact which is (not) to be ignored is that Shatter Dead won the prize for best US independent film on the Italian FANTAFILM festival.
