Director: Phil Tippett
I'm always highly skeptical about straight-to-video sequels, they're almost always unwatchable garbage. I'd have to put this one into the category of "watchable" garbage though. First off, the original Starship Troopers was an incredible movie, and it continues to blow me away with each viewing. How a movie like that got made with the kind of budget it had is beyond me. But Starship Troopers flopped, so a sequel with the same level of production would of course be out of the question. Despite the low budget, the special effects were still pretty decent. That's because the director (Phil Tippett) is actually a special effects wizard, he supervised the originals creature effects. Other than that, the directing couldn't hold a candle to Paul Verhoeven, who aside from Starship Troopers was also responsible for Total Recall & Robocop. The acting was fairly average for low-budget, but the characters where all one-dimensional. The story itself was unoriginal, which was disappointing since Ed Neumeier (the originals writer) also penned this one. It was a claustrophobic base where the aliens took over the human hosts one by one. How many times has something like that been done? Still, it had it's moments.
