Director: Dario Argento
TENEBRE (aka Sadows) (1982)
Over the past 3-4 decades Argento has presented the world with may bizarre gems.
I haven’t seen them all but so far I would say that Tenebre is not his best.
Argento is famous of his Giallo’s and this is one of them. Though the plot tends so take a few twists it’s not particularly surprising. To tell you the truth I wasn’t interested in ‘solving’ the mystery regarding the killer’s identity for the first half hour or so.
I must stress that this film doesn’t contain you classic Italian buckets of blood and spaghetti splatter. Tenebre is more of a murder-mystery thriller than actual horror, yet it barely scratches itself above the typical slasher.
Especially near the end a surprise gore-treat is given to the viewer.
However the DVD-menu is allot gorier than the film itself. Nevertheless, this film wins charm by it’s (at times) ridiculous script. Characters tend to engage in completely absurd actions and allot of the dialogues as extremely laughable.
-That’s a good thing !
The plot is quite simple : famous American writer travels to Rome (how appropriate) to present his latest book ‘ TENEBRE’. When he arrives the police inform him that some maniac is killing his victims in that same way as portrayed in his book….tam-tam-taaam.
Who is the killer ?! – That’s it really.
Practically your typical sleazy early 80’s thriller really, but with a few nice twitches.
Still don’t expect a masterpiece out of this one.
