The Exorcism of Emily Rose Review

Review: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Director: Scott Derrickson

This movie is touted as being "Based on a True Story." They push this on us both at the beginning, and at the end with some miscellaneous information about Emily's gravesite and other characters involved. This movie is not real. It is VERY loosely based on a case in Germany from the 1970's - but it is about as comparable as Texas Chainsaw or Psycho is to the Ed Gein case.
That being said, this was still a very good movie. It wasn't a straight-up horror movie or generic PG-13 rip-off of a Japanese horror movie like Hollywood has been pushing on us recently. The film could probably be described as a courtroom psychological horror/thriller. There are, of course, the obligatory "jumpscenes" and whatnot, but the majority of the movie is based on the trial of the priest who is being charged with neglegent homicide in Emily's death.
Actress Jennifer Carpenter who plays Emily was amazing in this role, as was Tom Wilkinson playing a very believable priest in Father Richard Moore.
All-in-all, this is one of those movies that may be forgotten in the drabble of horror flicks over time, but was great for a nice theatre-going experience right now.
