Director: Alexandre Aja
This remake of Wes Craven's 1977 film of the same name gives everything that the original film had to offer and more.
Originally a Z-Grade horror flick, Wes Craven's version had all the typical horror scares, but not the gore or fun that French-born director Alexandre Aja (High Tension) added to his version.
Taking from the original script as well as some rewrites of Craven's, Aja made this movie all his own, giving his audience more compasion and background on his characters. He does keep the same gritty feel that the original had (seemingly due to it's strained budget, not intended), by filming a majority of the movie in the hazy orange and reds of the desert in which it was filmed.
The story revolves around and extended family who are waylaid in the desert; the fun starts as they are killed off (violently) thanks to the area residents - a town of miners who refused to leave their town during atomic testing in the 50's.
By no means the most amazing film ever created, but with Aja's pull-no-blood splatter style filmmaking, it's at least good for the action and violence, if that's your thing.
