The New York Ripper Review

Review: The New York Ripper

Director: Fulci

This one is notorious – and justly so. Fulci delivers an eerie slasher with surprising humor as well as psychological depth. The plot rises above the standard giallo with sufficient twists as well as some truly memorable scenes as well as classic Fulcio eye-gouging. Allot more sexual over (and under)tones than you would usually find but surprisingly classy as well as sleazy. The New York Ripper is an anomaly. If not for all the above then for it’s NON-dubbing (or well done). The Japan-shock dvd edition however, keeps it’s tradition of awful subtitles up. Like Nightmare City the subtitle often is often slow, fatly or it just stops for 10 minutes.. . Suspense, gore, mystery, and plain degenerate behavior, this one has it all ! And it has a soundtrack which is not completely ridiculous either Fulci does what he does best. And if you are of those strange humanoids who can’t quite appreciate zombie films and therefore denied themselves other Fulci’s ( The Beyond, Zombie 2, City of the Living Dead or House By The Cemetery ) have no excuse to pass this one up. NYR is quite down to earth , not hell. And while the killer talks like a duck (donald duck, …seriously this will traumatize the wee ones) this one come pretty close to reality. Still, keep in mind the violence and sex is quite misogynistic but , I guess that’s to be expected. You will be amazed, upset and entertained (or traumatized). One thing is for sure, you won’t for get this one. I have yet to find a better in it’s genre. I highly recommend this one !
