Director: Scott Reynolds
I've passed over The Ugly in video stores many times based on the packaging. The cover isn't necessarily bad, actually it's pretty cool looking, but it does sort of give you the impression of a standard straight-to-video cliché-fest. For some reason I decided to finally rent it, and it turns out this movie wasn't half bad at all. The Ugly is one of the few horror movies from New Zealand, which can only mean the director Scott Reynolds is destined to make 300 million dollar epic trilogies in the near future. The direction was really the best thing about The Ugly. The story is told in a very stream of consciousness way, jumping back in forth between past, present, real, and imaginary. Strange occurrences happened but weren't explained, such as the blood of the killers victims was black rather than red. It took on a very artistic approach, breathing some new life into an otherwise tired serial killer plot. I particularly liked the scenes where his victims were undead. They had an extremely creepy look similar to what you would find in something like Hideo Nakata's movies.
